The Mens team played Bournemouth Razors, of Division 1, in the Senior Mens Cup onTue 21 Feb 2017 in what turned out to be a thrilling encounter. Royals got off to a fast start leading 10-0 after 3 mins, but the Razors slowly sliced into that margin to lead after the first quarter. The Royals struggled to get their offence going in the 2nd and conceded a heavy 26-7 quarter scoreline. The 3rd quarter was much better - the Royals slowly getting into their stride but they still went into the 4th quarter with a large deficit to make up. The large home crowd increased their volume and slowly the Royals started to make headway into the deficit. It was down to 8 points with 3 mins to go when a Razor fast break seemed to have quashed the threat - however 3pt buckets from Pascal Matthias and Jonny Philipson ramped the intensity up further going into the final minute. With 25 seconds to go the Royals had got to 59-60 down when they coughed up a turnover to seemingly end the match - however seconds later the ball was stolen with still a 1 point deficit. The offence setup with the clock ticking and 'Spirios' drove to the basket and made what seemed to be an acceptable layup....the whistle blew and we all thought 'and 1'................but the referee called a charge and nullified the basket. The Razors managed to run out the clock to win the game 60-59 on what was a thrilling game - but not with the ending we all wanted.
Thank you to all the players who fought back so well, and also to the amazing crowd who provided a brilliant atmosphere.
